The 1st Lincolnshire battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division had been in France and Flanders since the outbreak of war in August 1914 and had been involved in much of the fierce fighting that had taken place in the closing months of 1914 which established the trench lines of the Western Front. In mid-March, 1915, they moved to the notorious Hill 60 sector in the southern part of the Ypres salient where mines were being blown on a regular basis by both sides. From 2nd April until 11th April they were in the front line near St Eloi in a very exposed position and where the German artillery was always active.  John Phillips was wounded here on 4th April and sent to a base hospital on the coast where he died from his wounds on 18th April.
